Sallie Sterling
Sallie is a lifelong mathematics educator with decades of experience teaching students from elementary school through college. She earned her B.S. in Secondary Education with a concentration in Mathematics from Shippensburg University and her M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Sallie taught middle and high school mathematics for 34 years in both public and private schools throughout Maryland. She later spent 15 years teaching at Blue Ridge Community and Technical College in Martinsburg, West Virginia, where she served as Mathematics Department Chair for eight years.
Throughout her career, Sallie has gained extensive experience providing students with individualized math support. At two high schools in Frederick County, she ran math labs that provided drop-in tutoring for students. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she also provided virtual tutoring for the mathematics department at Blue Ridge in addition to teaching her college courses. At Prestige, Sallie tutors students across elementary, middle, and high school mathematics. She is comfortable working across math courses and particularly enjoys Statistics, having taught both AP Statistics at the high school level and Elementary Statistics at the community college level.
Sallie understands that many students experience anxiety around math, and she works to make the subject feel less intimidating. She stays flexible during her sessions and is willing to adjust her original plan when she senses that a student is becoming anxious or needs a different approach. With her many years of experience, Sallie is often able to anticipate where students may make mistakes and use their written work to better understand their thought process. Above all, she wants her students to find something they can enjoy about mathematics while becoming more confident in their abilities.
Outside of tutoring, Sallie enjoys spending time with her dog, singing with Hagerstown Choral Arts, and flower gardening with her husband. During the warmer months, they enjoy planting and tending to their gardens and watching their work come to life.
